VISITOR INFORMATION

Coordinates: 40°05'56" N, 44°49'27" E
Access: Located in the "Khosrov Forest" State Reserve, 13.5 km southeast of Garni, on the right bank of the Azat River, atop the Geghi Mountain.

OVERVIEW

Kaqavaberd, also known as the Partridge Fortress, is a magnificent medieval fortress nestled within the "Khosrov Forest" State Reserve in the Ararat region of Armenia. This fortress, perched atop the rugged Geghi Mountain, offers an extraordinary glimpse into Armenia's rich historical tapestry and medieval defense architecture. Despite its inaccessibility, the fortress's well-preserved walls and captivating historical significance make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

Layout: The fortress is located in the northeastern corner of Geghi Mountain, protected on three sides by inaccessible rocks. The northern side, the only vulnerable part, is fortified by a powerful wall with a thickness of 2.2 to 2.6 meters. This wall, built with lime mortar and rough stones, is reminiscent of the walls of Ani and the Havuts Tar Amenaprkich Monastery.

Towers: Out of the seven towers originally constructed, two towers still stand, each about 20 meters high. These towers contain small rooms and embrasures, providing strategic defensive positions.

Entrance: The high arched entrance, measuring 2-3 meters wide, is located on the western side of the 8-10 meter high preserved enclosure wall.

Structures: Inside the fortress, the foundations and traces of numerous structures can be seen, including a small rock-hewn chapel and three walls built with solid stones. Pottery fragments, including glazed and decorated samples, are scattered throughout the site.

PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION

The fortress's walls remain relatively well-preserved, showcasing the enduring craftsmanship of its builders. Conservation efforts have focused on maintaining the structural integrity of the fortress and protecting the surrounding natural environment. The fortress's strategic location and natural defenses have contributed significantly to its preservation.

LOCAL LEGЕNDS AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

Kaqavaberd is steeped in local legends and cultural significance. The fortress is mentioned in various historical texts and literary works, including the novel "Gevorg Marzpetuni" by Muratsan. The name "Kaqavaberd," meaning "fortress of partridge," reflects the rich natural environment of the "Khosrov Forest" State Reserve, which is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
