Access: Located in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia, approximately 60 km northeast of Yerevan. Accessible by car via the M4 highway, with regular bus and taxi services from the capital and nearby towns.

OVERVIEW

Lake Sevan is the largest freshwater lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region, and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, situated at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level. Often referred to as the "Blue Pearl of Armenia," the lake is a vital natural, cultural, and recreational resource for the country. Lake Sevan covers an area of around 1,240 square kilometers. Its pristine waters, sandy beaches, and surrounding mountains make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a serene environment for relaxation, water sports, and exploration.

NATURAL FEATURES

Geography: Lake Sevan is situated in a large mountain basin, surrounded by the Geghama, Vardenis, and Sevan mountain ranges. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams, with the Hrazdan River as its main outflow.
Water Quality: The lake's clear, blue waters are known for their purity. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the lake's ecological balance and improve water quality by managing water levels and reducing pollution.
Islands: Originally, the lake had several islands, but due to changes in water levels, most have turned into peninsulas. The most famous of these is the Sevan Peninsula, home to the historic Sevanavank Monastery.

Swimming and Sunbathing: The lake’s beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. The most visited beaches include those at Sevan city, Lchashen, and Shorzha.
Water Sports: Visitors can enjoy activities such as boating, kayaking, jet skiing, and windsurfing. Sailing is also popular, with several local clubs offering rentals and lessons.
Fishing: Sevan is home to several species of fish, including the endemic Sevan trout (Ishkhan) and whitefish. Fishing is a common pastime, both for sport and leisure.
Hiking and Camping: The surrounding mountains provide excellent opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring the natural beauty of the region. The trails offer stunning views of the lake and its surroundings.
