The South Caucasus Railway (SCR) is the sole railway operator in Armenia, responsible for all inter-city, commuter, and freight rail transport across a 780-kilometer network. The Armenian railway system, on which the South Caucasus Railway operates, was originally built during the Soviet era. The first railway line in Armenia was completed in 1899, connecting Alexandropol (now Gyumri) with Tbilisi in Georgia. The network expanded significantly during the Soviet period, especially in the 1930s and 1950s, when connections were built to other regions, forming the backbone of Armenia's current railway infrastructure.

After 2008 the operation of Armenian Railways was transferred to Russian Railways under a 30-year concession agreement. The railway uses the Russian gauge, consistent with neighboring countries.

SCR uses two main types of trains for passenger services:

  1. ER2 Trains: These Soviet-era trains consist of 3-4 cars and are commonly used on various routes, including Yerevan to Araks and Gyumri.
  2. EP2D Trains: Modern and more comfortable, these 2-car trains serve routes like Yerevan to Yeraskh and Gyumri. They offer a more up-to-date experience with enhanced amenities for passengers.

While Armenia's rail links with Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iran have been closed since 1993, the route to Georgia remains open, offering a scenic cross-border journey. The journey to Tbilisi typically takes around 10 hours, with stops at key cities like Gyumri and Vanadzor, while the trip to Batumi extends to approximately 15 hours, offering a picturesque route along the Black Sea coast. These routes are ideal for travelers seeking a comfortable cross-border experience, combining convenience with the opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes and cultures of the South Caucasus region.
